The World is Your Oyster - Alice Herrick
Alice Herrick invites you to her beachside studio for champagne and oysters!
The World is Your Oyster is a series of faces drawn onto oyster shells gathered during soul searching
beach walks and Westbrook is a new series of horizons drawn and painted on locally found beached
objects.
Alice Herrick is an artist and curator with an MA in Painting from Chelsea College of Art. She ran
eponymous galleries in Shoreditch and Mayfair before moving from London to Margate in 2023.
For the Off Season weekend, Alice has invited Arlington House based artists Susanne Hakuba and
Elizabeth Walker to exhibit a selection of their work alongside her…
Susanne’s images are inspired by her year round sea swims and long walks on the beach observing
the changing tides and light. They capture the atmospheric and enigmatic quality of Margate.
Elizabeth’s selection of work showcases her current obsession with Cyanotypes, Kintsugi and mixed
media artworks.

Meet and Be Met
An exhibition of queer portraiture created by Stef Felton and Brogan Bertie with curation by Amelia Von Christ. Through the mediums of film photography and oil painting the artists are able to explore the depth and reality of queer experience. The camera documenting and immortalising ephemeral moments in the lives of the subjects, the oil painting providing the time and space to intimately connect with the reality of the people behind the portraits. Combining the fleeting and the timeless the artists build a vivid landscape of queer identity as it exists in this place and time.

Gordon House: A Last Hurrah.
The final exhibition in the downstairs gallery space at Gordon House; this two-woman surrealist collaboration showcases towering sculptures by Anastasiia Tory and beautifully complex drawings by Lucy Lyons.
The artists are connected by a love for nature and a shared appreciation of the absurd. Their otherworldly and intimately detailed works combine a dark humour with a healthy dose of magical realism, creating familiar yet fantastical realms to explore in uncertain times. In a period of change for Gordon House, Margate and wider society, the artists find comfort in the surreal.

Projects Kavel Rafferty, 22 - 23 Cecil Square, Margate, CT9 1BA
The Weaver's Arms - Hannah Zbitnew
The Weaver’s Arms is a solo exhibition by London-based artist Hannah Zbitnew, nestled in the site of the former Margate Post Office, now Projects Kavel Rafferty. An ode to repetition, folk craft and the communal archive, pictorial weavings, costume outlines and threading drafts co-exist as renderings of Doukhobor textile techniques. Drawing from Zbitnew’s Doukhobor heritage, the work of once-known craftsmen and contemporary dress theory, her work serves as an acknowledgement to the intimate gestures of weaving and the effort of being a custodian to objects and their histories.
The Doukhobors share the Orthodox tradition of hanging their most intricate handwoven tea towel in pride of place; the main difference being the presence of a religious icon. The Doukhobors have no idols, and so the huckaback linens rest on the wall as a testament to skill, collectivity, and spirit. This work endeavours to do the same.

Laura Footes, A Healing Dream – Curated by Tracey Emin DBE RA
Footes’ new paintings for ‘A Healing Dream’ are set in the familiar spaces of the home, the place where a sick person ends up spending most of their time whilst in a kind of purgatory waiting to recover. Isolated, the convalescent is forced to draw on memories and imagination, and it is these two mental imaging processes which play a central role in how Footes’ work is formed. In her dream-like paintings, a cast of ghost-like forms are rendered through an elastic timeframe, occupying almost hallucinatory space yet tethered to a representational reality.

Van Dal
Last night, Van Dal, Margate’s furriest menace, hit Quench Gallery’s latest opening like a whirlwind of spray paint and lager fumes. He charmed the art crowd with his signature "street chic" look—half-smeared paint on his fur, an unlit cigarette tucked behind one ear—and promptly drank the bar dry. By the time the after-party at Camp kicked off, Van Dal was doing an interpretive dance with a potted plant, declaring it his "muse." The night climaxed at 4 a.m., with Van Dal attempting to jimmy the lock at Bombo Doughnuts, shouting, “Art runs on carbs.” Witnesses say he fled when a seagull mocked him.
The piece, titled "Rudy" by artist Van Dal, offers a poignant commentary on the intersection of nature and urban life. Made entirely from intricately layered felt fabric, the fox embodies the delicate balance between wildness and domestication. Displayed here in Bombo Doughnuts, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on the fox’s symbolic role in modern culture—both a creature of the natural world and a symbol of street-smart vermin.

Fipsi Seilern 'Something About Etna' solo exhibition in Main Space and Carson Parkin-Fairley 'I Could Watch You For Hours' in The Cupboard
In ‘Something About Etna’, London-based artist Fipsi Seilern explores her fascination with volcanic landscapes, cowboys with disembodied limbs, alongside an underlying fear of crowds. Using colour pencils to draw directly onto untreated wood panels, the compositions oscillate between solitude and chaos: some figures sit isolated with skulls and miniature pigs, while others charge on horseback, guns drawn, with an imminent sense of eruption.
Drawing inspiration from mediaeval tapestries, Middle Eastern miniatures, and Japanese woodblock prints, her new body of work reflects a shift from her previous work blending Old Master copies and graffiti, revealing a more introspective and instinctive approach. This series offers a meditation on personal and collective anxieties through a distinct, surreal and unique visual language.
Liminal Gallery are delighted to present ‘I Could Watch You For Hours’ by Carson Parkin-Fairley. The Cupboard has been transformed into a compact universe that evokes the dreamlike essence of 90s cartoons from the artists childhood. This installation pays homage to the captivating glow of television, immersing viewers in a vibrant animated realm.
Featuring a meticulously crafted miniature living room, it invites the audience to shrink down and experience a surreal after-school reverie. Adorned with miniature neon paintings that celebrate influential childhood shows, the piece encourages viewers to peer inside and lose themselves in nostalgic contemplation.

Imogen-Naomi Herd: ‘A Nutshell Study of Playing House’ at Doubloons
We no longer dream of going to the moon. Our fantasies are instead filled with the promise of one day owning a house and therefore security. Inspired by Frances Glessner Lee’s forensic studies miniatures, this installation is a dissection into the legacy of the nuclear family ideology of the ‘secure life’. Playing with the ‘shop window display’ setting, the piece explores themes of desire, childhood, the cultural history of play, the history of dollhouses, performance of gender, domesticity, class inequality, and memory, through the lens of the Sylvanian Families’ lore.

Patrick Lears - Glassworks
The medium here is fused glass and though the process is ancient (both Egyptians and Romans were proficient glass workers) there has been a renaissance in the technique with modern fusible glasses readily available. All work is fired and fused to high temperatures in a kiln. The process of making these works appeals to my sense of assemblage and collage. Glass manages to be at once both solid and fragile and I like the idea of harnessing natural light into a work. Additionally as with anything fired in a kiln there is an element of chance often resulting in the ‘happy accident’. The works here were created specifically for the venue.’

Rags Of Evidence by Delaine Le Bas and Grow Room by Catherine Chinatree
Quench Gallery presents the opening of two solo exhibitions on Saturday 25th January. Rags Of Evidence (25012025-16032025) by Delaine Le Bas is an installation that will feature clothing hand-made and decorated by the artist, festooned with her vocabulary of symbols - the Medusa, cartoon characters, slogans and challenges. The gallery will be reconfigured with drapery and the walls, floors and ceilings covered with calico, and a series of photographic portraits of the artist chosen from a two decade working relationship with photographer Tara Darby. Grow Room by Catherine Chinatree will revisit the artist's teenage experiences of her first Jungle rave in her hometown of Leicester in 1998. She will present a new series of paintings alongside sound and moving image works that explore ideas of youth, class, memory and nostalgia. Chinatree aims to evoke a palette that reflects the bass-heavy underground movement, artificial lighting and a sense of the unknown going hand in hand with the uncertainty of teenage years.

Pink Suits - Porn. Protest. Politics.
Porn. Protest. Politics. is a visual arts exhibition taking over the artists home. This is your chance to explore the home life and work of pink suits in the most intimate way.
This work explores how our bodies are used & politicised, interrogating relationships between Art & Politics, Art & Sexuality, Art & Protest. How do we separate the art and the artist and why are we obsessed with doing so? So we can consume good art and ignore bad politics? Is art inherently political? How does it interact with and affect our personal politics? Our art is our life, and our politics are our art. This exhibition is a glimpse into our world, an intimate showcase of our life. We live where we work and we work where we live. Some of this artwork is very explicit and pornographic in nature and is for audiences aged 18+

Things I Am No Longer Afraid Of - Jemma Channing
Unraveling the strange connection between folklore, magical thinking, and anxiety, this exhibition dives into the ludicrous scenarios my overactive brain has spun over the years—rituals, superstitions, and worst-case fantasies, from small-town legends to cosmic myths.
Featuring new work which reveals the absurd and obsessive ways I have tried to make sense of the nonsense of life over the years. In sharing them, their power is taken, and I can get on with my day.
You can view the exhibition 24/7 via the window of Margate Arts Club

‘Waking up’ by Clare Evans
Margate yoga presents ‘Waking up’, a series of figurative paintings by Clare Evans from January 24th -26th as part of the Off Season Margate art festival.
These large, dynamic paintings serve as a time capsule of Clare’s 4-year-old daughter’s waking movements and stretches in the weeks before she started school. Clare used familiar tools from her past work decorating homes and galleries, along with leftover paints from decorating her home while her baby slept.
“There’s a freedom in using house paint to create ‘art.’ I like the fact that you don’t have to rely on expensive materials to make big pictures.”
Painting with domestic house paint and tools symbolises Clare's shift from domestic duties to creative expression, using the materials of her home as a bridge between the two. It reflects her process of reclaiming her artistic identity while navigating the bittersweet transition of her daughter starting school.

The Seagulls Remind me of You - Elouise Farley
The evocative power of birdsong inspired Elouise’s first solo exhibition. Created during a bleak period, during which Elouise survived on Morrison’s rotisserie chicken, snapping the wishbone in the kitchen by herself. This series of sculptures explore 'guts'—spilling them, being gutted, gutlessness, and the pecking out of guts, as in the Prometheus myth. The work also draws on the ugly cry of the seagull, reimagined as a Siren’s call, and on birdsong as a trigger for memories that tie us to people and places.

Wish You Were Here - James Kingman
The Tap Room presents Wish You Were Here, a solo exhibition by James Kingman, as part of the Off Season Art Trail. This evocative collection reflects on the emotional pull of memory, exploring how the natural world and music replay cherished moments in our minds.
Using screen printing, painting, and spray painting, Kingman’s work blends bold, expressive textures that form a pseudo-surreal, urban aesthetic. The pieces incorporate song lyrics, creating a bridge between personal reflection and universal connection. The exhibition invites viewers to experience the transient beauty of sunsets and the rhythmic energy of the sea through a tactile, emotive lens.
